Trail Running Vacations in the Dolomites: Our Origin Story

Trail Running Vacations in the Dolomites
The breathtaking Dolomites, where our trail running vacations began.

Here at NomaTrails, we don’t just run; we traverse. We immerse ourselves in places, connecting deeply with the land and its people. But our whole philosophy, these incredible journeys we share with you around the world, truly started with a simple idea, right here in Italy. For years, our Italian mountain and outdoor guide team, including our good friend Igor, simply ran. It was a natural part of life in these mountains, a way to stay fit for demanding jobs, or just to play on the trails during days off. Sometimes, it was pure logistics. One of us would drop off guests at a trailhead, then run miles ahead to the next mountain hut, carrying their luggage. We were always running, always moving. It’s how we lived, how we breathed, and it laid the foundation for what would become our signature **Trail Running Vacations in the Dolomites**.

A Fateful Meeting Ignited Our Trail Running Vacations in the Dolomites

Getting in a long run on the famous Alta Via 1 and 2 trails of the Dolomites was just part of our daily rhythm. For us, running was inherent to our mountain lifestyle. Yet, it never crossed our minds that our guests might want to join us on these runs. We saw it as our thing, our way to explore. Then, a chance encounter changed everything for our future **trail running vacations in the Dolomites**.

It was spring 2006 when Dan Patitucci, a curly-haired, skinny American with olive skin, walked into our office. He was looking for the best spots to photograph the Dolomites’ incredible peaks and views. We quickly learned he was Dan Patitucci of PatitucciPhoto, and together with his wife, Janine, they are some of the most talented outdoor adventure photographers out there, especially when it comes to capturing the raw beauty of trail running. He truly saw the mountains the way we did.

Pasta and Glasses of Red Wine: The Spark for Trail Running Vacations

Needless to say, we hit it off instantly with Dan. He loved the Dolomites, and he loved all things Italian, especially the food from our company kitchens. There’s nothing quite like sharing a meal after a long day in the mountains, right? One evening, over heaping plates of pasta and generous glasses of red wine, Dan leaned in and said something that changed our path forever:

“Igor, have you ever considered offering trail running vacations? Trail running is blowing up in the U.S. Many Americans would jump at the chance to do a trail running vacation in the Dolomites!”

I remember Igor’s face. “Trail what?” he asked, a genuine look of confusion. Up to that point, “trail running” wasn’t a distinct concept for us. It was just… running. We ran to get from point A to point B, to enjoy the mountains, to feel alive. “You mean people think of trail running as something different from running?” he pressed. Dan just smiled. “You bet, and you have some of the world’s best trails right here in the Dolomites!” he declared. That conversation was the spark. It was the moment we realized our everyday passion could be something truly special for others. You can learn more about the region’s unique geology and history on Wikipedia’s Dolomites page.

This is Where “Running” Became “Trail Running Vacations”

That was all the push we needed. After seven years of offering every other kind of adventure – from hiking to climbing, mountain biking and cycling – we finally added dedicated **trail running vacations** to our roster. We knew these trails like the back of our hands, and now we had a name for the experience we wanted to share.

In the summer of 2007, we launched our first hut-to-hut trail running vacation in the Dolomites on the famous Alta Via 1 trail, a spectacular 87-km route covered over five days. It was raw, exhilarating, and exactly what we envisioned. In 2009, we added the more strenuous Alta Via 2 to the itinerary, creating an ambitious five-day, 115-km adventure for endurance junkies. It was exciting, challenging, and truly embodied the spirit of traversing a place on foot, just like our ancestors did.

The Evolution of Trail Running in the Dolomites

By 2011, the concept of **trail running vacations in the Dolomites** had really taken hold. We had learned so much from our early runners, listening to their feedback, understanding what truly made their experience unforgettable. We took all that valuable insight and developed what has since become our best-selling program: a new hut-to-hut trail running adventure that blends the best parts of the Alta Via 1 and 2 into a single, unforgettable trip. We refined the routes, found the coziest huts, and perfected the logistics so you could just focus on the run.

These point-to-point trails pass through the heart of the Dolomites, taking you past its famous peaks: the Santa Croce-Conturines, Tofana de Rozes, Lagazuoi, the Sella Massif, Cir Peaks, and Odle mountains. You get to experience the freedom of running scenic mountain trails and sleeping in cozy, well-equipped mountain huts (or “rifugio” in Italian), all without the burden of a heavy backpack – our staff takes care of transporting your gear from hut to hut. It’s about immersion, not burden. It’s about feeling the mountains, the wind, the sun, and leaving your worries behind. The NomaTrails Way: Running as Exploration, Everywhere

What started here with **Trail Running Vacations in the Dolomites** is a philosophy we apply to all our trips, no matter where we go. We don’t just run *in* a place; we run *through* it, becoming part of its fabric. These aren’t just runs; they are journeys that change you. They are stories you’ll tell your grandkids. If you want to understand our core beliefs, take a look at Our Philosophy.

Sicily: From Sea to Mountain, Through Hidden Villages

Take Sicily, for example, a place Pasquale, our guide, knows inside out. He always says, “We’ll arrive from the sea, pass through the internal rural area, so the Sicilian countryside, and from these mountain towns, we’ll climb to the upper part, not by scaling peaks, but by moving through its valleys, its gentle spots.” Imagine that: starting with the salty air, running inland through ancient olive groves, past tiny, sun-baked villages where time seems to stand still. We descend towards the sea again, sleeping in a village like Isnello, from which you can practically see the water shimmering in the distance.

From Isnello, we hit another stretch of trail that takes us above Cefalù. Pasquale explains that due to the unique geomorfology of the coast – where the mountains truly just drop into the sea – we sometimes have to take a quick, small transfer by vehicle. It’s a short hop, a fast shuttle, just enough to bridge an impassable section, and then we’re back on our feet, ready for a well-deserved swim in the sea. It’s this kind of traverse, connecting different worlds and adapting to the land, that makes our trips so special. We use running to see the soul of the island, a perspective you just can’t get any other way.

Morocco: Waking with the Desert, Connecting with Souls

Or think about Morocco, with Abdu and me. We’ll run 15-16 miles a day, sure, but it’s really about the people, the experience. I’ve seen friends, after a trip, get tears in their eyes talking about the deep connections we made, the way they felt like part of a nomadic family, sharing meals and cups of sweet mint tea. They tell us, “We want to be your friends and we want to keep in touch with you.” That’s what it’s all about.

Imagine this with me: waking up at 3 AM in the desert, the air cool and crisp. You’re running behind Abdu for two hours in the soft sand, the only sound your footsteps and our breathing. We stop, and maybe Abdu, with his deep knowledge of the night sky, shows you the stars – so clear you feel like you’re seeing every single one, closer than you ever have before. Then, after those two hours of running and walking, you’re ready for the most beautiful sunrise, painting the dunes in fiery colors. That’s a moment we create, a memory etched forever.

One time, we were running in the middle of nowhere, heading towards a place I didn’t even know. This was five and a half hours in the opposite direction from where any tourist bus would go from Marrakesh. We discovered this incredible valley, this beautiful oasis. The people there, they live the way they did 500 years ago. We met the most beautiful human beings, trying to learn their Berber language, which I’ve been trying to learn for nine years and still struggle with!

We found this family by an irrigation channel in a deep canyon. This little 12-year-old girl, with a beautiful face – like “you could make corn flakes with her,” as I always say – she immediately ran to look for some wood. She made a fire for us, right there in the canyon, and then she invited us for tea. That’s time travel. That’s the deep human connection that transforms you on our journeys. It’s not just a run; it’s a story that changes you, changes your perspective on everything. These are the experiences we strive for, whether it’s in the Atlas Mountains or on a coastal run in Costa Brava.
