There’s nothing quite like single track trail running! For me, it’s the absolute best way to truly know a place.
I mean, sure, I’ll take any non-asphalt surface over pavement any day, but there’s just something special about single track. It’s not just about getting fit; it’s about using our legs, our bodies, our lungs – like our ancestors did – as a real means of transportation. This is how we discover and explore, getting to know the land on its own terms.
Runner in Guatemala
When you’re out there, it’s like you’re truly running through the wild. You’ve got to pay extra attention to where you place each foot – a misplaced step on a loose volcanic rock near San Pedro La Laguna, and you’ll know it!
That constant focus actually makes a run go by so fast, the mental effort of watching your footing carefully keeps you totally immersed. (It’s a great way to forget about the office, believe me.)
You know, so many of the single track trails around Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan will never be found in any guidebook. These aren’t tourist paths; they’re usually local commuter trails, carved by daily life.
Real Trail Running Adventures
While running these paths, you’ll often cross paths with a local Guatemalan heading to or from work. Their “office” might be their own corn field high on the slopes of Volcán Tolimán, or a coffee plantation nestled into the hillsides. The men often carry machetes, their essential tool for daily tasks. (I’ve even learned a few words of Kaqchikel from folks on the trail!) It’s these authentic interactions, seeing the raw, beautiful culture in action alongside the stunning scenery, that makes trail running adventures in Guatemala so uniquely rewarding.
It’s this deep connection that defines NomaTrails. We don’t just run; we traverse. Think about it: our guide Pasquale will take you from the Mediterranean Sea in Sicily, through its rural inland, up into mountain villages like Isnello where you can see the sea again, then over the hills above Cefalù. Or imagine waking up at 3 AM in the Moroccan desert, running behind Abdu for two hours as the sand shifts underfoot, then stopping to watch the most incredible sunrise you’ve ever seen. These are the moments we create with our small groups.
I’ll show you the best singletrack around Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan – the paths that truly belong to the land and its people.
