In This Guide

Ready to Run?

Join our next trail running adventure in Costa Rica, Morocco, Sicily, or the Pyrenees.

Distance running was cherished since it was essential to our survival and expansion. You ran to eat and avoid being eaten, to find a mate and impress her, and to start a new life with her. Run or you’d never love anything else. Like everything else we love—our ‘passions’ and ‘desires’—it’s an ancestral requirement. We were born because we run.

Motivational Trail Running Quotes: Finding the Courage to Start

“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” – John Bingham

This one, by John Bingham, really hits me. I’ve seen it time and again. People come to us, unsure, maybe a little intimidated by the idea of running point-to-point across a whole region. I remember a woman on our Costa Rica trip, she’d never done anything like it. On the first morning, she looked at the trail, then at me, with this mix of fear and excitement. She thought she couldn’t do it. But she started. And that, for us, is always the biggest victory. Just lacing up and stepping out.

“If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon.” – Emil Zatopek

Emil Zatopek knew it. Running a mile is one thing; running a marathon is another. But a NomaTrails adventure? That’s a whole different life, truly. It’s not just a marathon; it’s days of traversing, seeing the world through your own effort. I think of Pasquale’s Sicily runs. We start by the sea, run through these old rural areas, then climb into the mountains, past villages like Isnello where you can see the sea from high up. It’s not just miles; it’s a story unfolding with every step.

“A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts.” – Steve Prefontaine

Prefontaine had it right. We’re not about speed here. We’re about guts. About pushing through when your legs are tired, when the dust is in your face, when you’re not sure what’s around the next bend. Abdu, my friend and guide in Morocco, often says the same. We run 15-16 miles a day in the Atlas Mountains, not to be fast, but to truly experience the place, to see what we’re made of. It’s about that inner strength that comes out when you least expect it.

“Only the disciplined ones in life are free.” – Eliud Kipchoge

Kipchoge, a legend, understands discipline. I remember one morning in Morocco, Abdu and I were up at 3 AM. We ran for two hours in the desert, just us and the sand. No one else. The discipline to get out there, to embrace the quiet, to feel the cool air before the sun even thought about rising. And then, we stopped. And the stars? My friend, they were so bright, so clear, like you could reach out and touch every single one. That’s freedom. That’s a moment you tell your grandkids about. You can read more about Eliud Kipchoge’s incredible career on Wikipedia.

“A good laugh and a long run are the two best cures for anything.” – Amby Burfoot

Absolutely. On our trips, the running is serious, yes, but the laughter? That’s just as important. After a long day on the trails, sharing a meal with our group, maybe some local wine in Catalonia or a mint tea in Morocco, the stories flow. The jokes, the shared exhaustion, the bonds that form – those are the cures. Those are the memories.

“There is no wonder in the fact that I completed the task. The fact that I even got started is a miracle.”
John Bingham, an accomplished runner and novelist

As time goes on, nerves give way to exhilaration and a pure curiosity to find out what you’re capable of.
Lauren Brown is a distance runner from the United States.

“Running a risky race and facing the unknown forces you to discover fascinating things about yourself.”
Dora Black, UK runner

Perhaps all of our problems – all of the violence, obesity, illness, sadness, and greed that we can’t seem to overcome – started when we stopped living as Running People. If you deny your nature, it will erupt in a different, uglier form.
Giovanni, Romario

“Advantages of running include improved health, less stress, a chance to connect with nature, and the company of other runners. Although I enjoy running overall, the thing that has always made it truly enjoyable for me is competing in races.”
Four-time Boston Marathon victor Bill Rodgers

“The elegance of running lies in its simplicity, and the elegance of runners is in our shared desire to better ourselves. We’re either aiming for a new personal record or stepping into the starting line for the first time, both of which will inevitably lead to further attempts at new PBs in the future.”
—Deena Kastor, Olympic medalist for the United States

“Exactly what use does race serve? The opportunity to be the best, the need to prove oneself, and the necessity to take risks all contribute to this.”
Journalist and author George Sheeha

Gold and silver medallist at the Olympics, Allyson Felix
“I believe, wholeheartedly, that racing requires extreme bravery. As difficult as it is, sometimes you just have to take some chances and show some aggression.”
In the words of Bill Rodgers:

A gazelle in Africa must outrun the fastest lion every morning or be murdered. A lion awakens every dawn in Africa. It must outrun the slowest gazelle or starve. When the sun rises, you’d better be running, lion or gazelle.
Joan Perafita
“Racing is the exciting part; it’s what you work for.”
American distance runner Kara Goucher

You might as well not get out of bed in the morning if you’re mentally unable to compete.
Long-distance runner and American icon Todd Williams

“Before a major race, I tend to think rather simply. In my head, I keep repeating, “Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. The saying goes, “If you play your cards right, you’ll win.””
Nin-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis

“I get a rush out of stomping all over my competition and dominating a race. Get nasty with me, shall we? Let’s get into a fight. It is primitive and animalistic; there is no one to rely on but oneself. Indeed, that’s the greatest high one can experience.”
U.S. 5K national champion Adam Goucher

“Let’s get it out of the way now. It’s painful to race. A second truth is that it hurts considerably more to have trained hard for a race and then not give it your all. The initial discomfort usually fades after a day or two. Anguish of the second variety can remain with one forever.”
Zen and the Art of Racing author Larry Shapiro

“Racing can serve as motivation for a variety of reasons, from logging more miles to improving overall health and well-being.
Author and runner Hal Higdon

“Have faith in the training you performed to win the race. Look at your training records to reassure yourself that you are fully ready to take on the challenge ahead. The race itself is exciting because it’s where all your training pays off. Relax and take things easy.”

By George Sheehan

“If you’re not feeling well after 10 kilometers, things won’t improve. If you’re not feeling great after 20 miles, that’s completely normal. To say that 26 miles doesn’t make you feel horrible is an understatement.”
Australia’s Rob de Castella, the world’s best marathoner, said this.

“The elegance of running lies in its simplicity, and the elegance of runners is in our shared desire to better ourselves. Funny Trail Running Quotes: Embracing the Lighter Side

“If you run 100 miles a week, you can eat anything you want. Why? Because… look at the size of you!” – Rob de Castella

Haha, Rob de Castella has a point! After a big day running through the olive groves of Sicily, or up and down the hills of the Costa Brava, we definitely earn our meals. We’re talking huge plates of pasta, fresh seafood, maybe a big slice of cake. It’s one of the best parts, honestly. Fueling up after pushing your body, feeling absolutely no guilt. That’s the NomaTrails way.

“There is no such thing as a bad run. There are just some runs that feel better than others.” – Hal Higdon

This is so true. Sometimes you hit a patch, like that one time in Morocco, where we were running through this deep canyon. It was unexpected, a bit rough, and I wasn’t sure where we were going. But even those runs, the ones that feel tough in the moment, they become the best stories later. They become the ones we talk about, laughing about the dust and the sweat, over a cold beer back in Girona.

“I go running when I have to. Like when the ice cream truck is leaving.” – Milton Berle

We all have those moments, right? Sometimes it’s just the pure joy of chasing something simple. Maybe it’s not an ice cream truck, but the promise of a cold drink at the end of a long segment, or the first glimpse of the sea after miles inland. Those little motivations keep us moving.

“Fast runners and slow runners both cross the finish line. The difference? The slow ones get more value for their money.” – Unknown

This quote perfectly captures our philosophy. At NomaTrails, we don’t care about your pace. We care about the experience. The slower you go, the more you see, the more you absorb. You get to truly live in the moment, to connect with the land, the people, the culture. That’s value, my friend. That’s what makes these inspiring trail running quotes so relatable.

Our running adventures company had been organizing multiday vacations for runners since 2011.

“Funny how on race day the same pace in training can feel so much easier . Keep your chin up. Have faith in the journey.”
Sara Hall, an American distance runner

Inspirational Trail Running Quotes: Beyond the Finish Line

“The real purpose of running isn’t to win a race, it’s to test the limits of the human heart.” – Bill Bowerman

This is the core of NomaTrails. When I talk about what we do, I always say running is just a means of transportation for us. It’s not about improving your fitness or getting slim. It’s about exploration, like our ancestors did. It’s about seeing how far your heart can take you, not just your legs. We go to places where running is the most efficient way to truly traverse the territory, to feel it in your bones.

“Winning has nothing to do with racing. Most days don’t have races anyway. Winning is about struggle and effort and optimism, and never, ever giving up.” – Amby Burfoot

Exactly. We’re not racing. We’re on an expedition. In Morocco, we were running towards a place I didn’t even know, deep in the Atlas Mountains. After hours, we came across this incredible valley, so far from anywhere. It was a struggle to get there, but the reward was seeing something truly untouched. That’s winning, for us. It’s the effort, the optimism, and the sheer refusal to quit when the path gets tough. It’s what makes these inspiring trail running quotes resonate so deeply.

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhi understood something profound about inner strength. On our trips, especially in places like the Atlas Mountains where we climbed a peak over 2,000 meters, it’s not just about how strong your legs are. It’s about your will. It’s about that voice inside you that says, “Keep going.” That’s the real muscle we train.

“To put it plainly, your objective is to complete the task. Try to enjoy your first race rather than trying to win it.”
Author of “The Runner’s Handbook,” Bob Glover

It’s not enough to wish for victory; you must prepare for it
Mo Farah, UK runner

“When I go for a run, I have some time to myself and my mind can relax from the knots it has been in since the beginning of the day. When I’m done with my run, that’s it; I’ve pounded out my frustrations on the pavement and focused my kinetic energy into my legs.”
Runner Rob Haneisen

If you can fix these nine inches, you’ll be able to compete with anyone in the world.
Gold medallist English Olympian Sebastian Coe

“Praising your own achievements will get you nowhere.”
Author: Steve Prefontaine

“There’s something about the emotions at the finish line after a long run that I find hard to resist. My favorite sensation is when I’ve worked up a good sweat and am completely spent. A decent muscle soreness after accomplishing something worthwhile is one of my favorite feelings.”
Mile Markers author Kristin Armstrong

“Just be natural and act equine. Get stupid. Don’t walk, run.”
Track and field legend and legendary coach Jumbo Elliot

“There is an end to every suffering. I know that I just need to keep moving forward, one step at a time.”
Journalist and runner Kim Cowart

“It’s not about the finish line when it comes to running. The purpose of this experiment is to see how far the human heart can go.”
Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman

“Magical pixie dust was sprinkled into our running shoes. The ability to turn around a bad day, channel aggravation into speed, overcome uncertainty with confidence, and turn chocolate cake into muscle.”
From the book “Run Like a Girl,” written by Mina Samuels

“Experiencing extreme distress can be cathartic in a way. It’s as simple as asking any runner.”
By Dean Karnazes

“Maintain a regular running schedule. Go the distance. However, you should never let your enthusiasm for running fade.”
—Julie Isphording, American Olympian runner

Running as a Metaphor for Life: Inspiring Trail Running Quotes for Transformation

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” – Steve Prefontaine

This is a powerful one. When we’re out there, whether it’s the Pyrenees or Costa Rica, we’re giving our best, not just to the run, but to the experience. We’re fully present. That’s the gift. That’s why these trips can be so profound.

“A marathon is like life with its ups and downs, but once you’ve done it, you feel that you can do anything.” – Unknown

This is something I’ve seen firsthand. Our trips, they change people. I remember a couple who came on a Costa Rica adventure. They were married, but not to each other at the time. They joined the next group, and guess what? They were married to each other! We’ve had so many couples tell us our trips saved their marriage, or even led to children. “This baby wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for you,” they’d say. It sounds wild, but it’s true. These experiences, these inspiring trail running quotes, they unlock something deep inside you, showing you what you’re truly capable of.

“It’s very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually, you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants to quit.” – George Sheehan

Sheehan nails it. On our longer traverses, the real challenge isn’t the person next to you. It’s that little devil on your shoulder whispering, “Stop. You’re tired. It’s too far.” But you keep moving, one foot in front of the other. And when you push past that voice, when you realize you can keep going, that’s where the magic happens. That’s the growth.

For Those Training for a Big Race: The Will to Prepare

“It’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” – Vince Lombardi

Lombardi’s wisdom applies so well to our adventures. We don’t “win” races, but we prepare for life. We prepare to face the unexpected, to adapt, to push our limits. That preparation, that journey of getting ready for whatever the trail throws at you, is what truly matters.

“Your body will argue that there is no justifiable reason to continue. Your only recourse is to call on your spirit, which fortunately functions independently of logic.” – Tim Noakes

This is a feeling I know well. On that 2,000-meter peak in Morocco, my body was screaming. Every fiber was telling me to stop. But there’s something else, isn’t there? A spirit, a will, that just keeps going. It doesn’t listen to logic. It just pushes forward. That’s the indomitable human spirit Dean Karnazes talks about, and it’s what we tap into on every NomaTrails expedition. For more on the physiology of endurance, check out resources from organizations like the Runner’s World.

Whether you need motivation for your morning runs, a little inspiration before your next adventure, or just a reminder that running is one of the greatest metaphors for life, these inspiring trail running quotes should do the trick.

Running is as much a mental sport as it is a physical activity, and the words of legendary runners, coaches, and thinkers can push us past our comfort zone. They remind us why we love this simple, powerful act of movement.

Which of these motivational quotes resonates most with you? Maybe it’s one that reminds you of a tough climb in Sicily, or a peaceful morning run along the Costa Brava. Whatever it is, embrace that feeling.
